The Independence Day is celebrated on July 26.Main event of the day
is the official celebrations in the Republic square.The event starts with
a parade of the national security service and of national corps of cadets,
followed by traditional and modern dances and parades by pupils in gaudy
uniforms.After that, there is a boats parade with traditional and modern themes.
Maldives Independence Day has a lot of significance, as it is on this day that this country got freedom from the clutches of Britishers.
On November 3, 1988 a terrorist group from Sri Lanka tried to overthrow the Maldivian government.
After they failed, they fled the country.

A Portuguese fleet attacked Male' in 1558. The ruling Sultan Ali 6th fought against the invaders with little support from his fellow countrymen. He was killed in the fighting. He is hailed as a national hero and declared a martyr. He was killed on 1 Shauban 965 A.H. (Islamic calendar). Every year 1 Shauban is marked Martyr's day in the memory of Sultan Ali 6th.
Every year, Fishermen's Day is celebrated on 10 December to emphasise the importance of fishing to the Maldivian economy and the livelihood of Maldivians. The Maldivan fishing industry is renowned for its dolphin friendliness. Fishing is the main occupation and livelihood of Maldivians and the country's second largest industry.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, the fasting month and one of the most outstanding months in terms of how patterns of life and other aspects change from the norm. The month commemorates the revelation of Quran and all Muslims fast during the day abstaining from all food and drink. The fast is broken at sunset and a wondrous spread of food and drink is prepared in each household to break the fast.
Eid –Ul al’h’aa is celebrated on the tenth day of the Zul Hijja month of the Islamic
calendar. This period is dedicated to the pilgrimage to the Mecca or to celebrations

Family, friends, neighbors and total strangers are invited to take part in the recitation of prayers and to enjoy the feast. In the afternoon different events are held to mark the day. Today traditional activities go hand in hand with sports and other community celebrations.
On 1st July 1573, Muhammed Thakurufaanu defeated the occupying Portuguese forces. The National Day honors Muhammed Thakurufaanu and celebrates the liberation of the country four centuries ago. The National Day is marked on the 1st of Rabeeul Awwal; the first day of the third month in the Islamic Calendar.
This day celebrates the defeat of the Malabar pirates by the Haas Sultan. In 1752, in the third year of the reign of Sultan Mukarram Muhammad Imadudheen 3, a South Indian expedition captured Male', took the King with them and destroyed the palace. This occurred on 13th Safar 1166 A.H. (Islamic Calendar).
